Quick answer: A clean GA4 setup takes seven steps. Create the property, add a web data stream, install the Google tag (ideally through Google Tag Manager), review Enhanced Measurement, mark your real conversions as key events, change data retention to 14 months, and test everything in DebugView before you trust a single report.
Why most GA4 setups go wrong
GA4 is easy to install and hard to configure well. Pasting the tag on a site gives you page views and a few automatic events, but it does not tell GA4 what actually matters to your business. The result is a property full of data and empty of answers. The steps below fix that from day one.
Step 1: Create the GA4 property
In Google Analytics, go to Admin, then Create, then Property. Use your business name, the correct reporting time zone and your currency. Time zone and currency affect every revenue report later, so set them carefully now.
Step 2: Add a web data stream
Choose Web, enter your domain and give the stream a clear name. Copy the Measurement ID that starts with G-. You will need it in the next step.
Step 3: Install the Google tag through GTM
I recommend Google Tag Manager over hard-coding the tag. In GTM, create a Google Tag, paste your Measurement ID and fire it on Initialization – All Pages. This gives you one place to manage GA4, Google Ads and every other platform. If you have not set up GTM yet, start with my Google Tag Manager setup guide.
Step 4: Review Enhanced Measurement
Enhanced Measurement tracks scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement and file downloads automatically. Keep what is useful. Turn off form interactions if you plan to track forms yourself, otherwise you will get noisy or duplicate events.
Step 5: Track the actions that matter
List the actions that mean business for you: a lead form, a booking, a phone click, a purchase. Track each one as a clear event, for example generate_lead or purchase, then mark only those as key events in Admin. Fewer, cleaner key events make every report easier to read.
Step 6: Fix the default settings
- Data retention: change from 2 months to 14 months.
- Internal traffic: define your office IP and activate the filter.
- Unwanted referrals: add payment gateways such as PayPal or Stripe.
- Google Ads: link the account so key events can be imported.
Step 7: Test in DebugView
Open GTM Preview, browse your site and watch the events arrive in Admin, then DebugView. Check event names and parameters before you publish. Standard reports can take 24 to 48 hours to fill, so use DebugView and Realtime to confirm the setup on the same day.
FAQ
Do I need Google Tag Manager to use GA4?
No, you can install the Google tag directly. GTM is still the better choice because you can add events, Google Ads tags and Meta tags later without editing site code.
Why is my GA4 data missing for today?
Standard reports are processed with a delay of up to 48 hours. Use Realtime and DebugView to confirm that data is being collected.
How many key events should I have?
Usually two to five. Mark only actions that represent real business value, such as leads, bookings and purchases.
